Course Content

This course covers ideas about and scholarly perspectives on cultural identities and historical processes in Europe, linking ethnological, folkloric and related disciplinary perspectives to broader theoretical developments in the social sciences and the humanities. The course brings a theoretical depth to analytical categories such as culture, ethnicity, identity, ritual and narration. Studies of empirical work and theoretical discussions of the categories mentioned above are included, drawn from international research in ethnology and related disciplines. It provides a general theoretical foundation and understanding of perspectives on knowledge and academic praxis in ethnology, as well as training in academic speech and writing. Entry requirements: Bachelor's degree including 90 credits in Ethnology or the equivalent as the main field of study and English B or equivalent. Examination format The course is examined through oral presentations and written hand-in assignments, participation in seminars and in higher seminars in ethnology. The grading criteria are distributed prior to the start of a course or module. If a student has a certificate from Södertörn University for compensatory support, the examiner has the right to decide on an adapted examination or alternative form of examination in accordance with Södertörn University's regulations.
